Marilyne Blais and Kate Moss met through mutual friends in Vancouver in the summer of 2010.

Both living away from the cities where they grew up- the importance and value of establishing a community and network is bestowed within their art practice.

There is a performative aspect central to social organisation, community and friendship; creativity emerges and is intensified by interaction, when time and space become shared and modeled through experiences.

We Build Up is an exhibition that will involve two spaces, Rearview Gallery in Melbourne, Australia and Artbank in Vancouver, Canada. Linked together via a video projection, both spaces will be occupied by individuals working together to construct a mutual place where the final outcome is undefined.

Working together from opposite sides of the globe Blais and Moss ‘s practice investigates collective imagination through creative impulse. By creating a temporary structure via an internet connection We Build Up seeks to question what happens when community is created through a share of space and how creating places together gives birth to community.

Architectures

Architectures is an ephemeral installation comprised of architectural miniatures created from compacted earth. The miniatures are modelled on particular pieces of religious architecture (churches, mosques, synagogues and temples). The disparity between the small ephemeral soil sculptures and the monumental edifices, on which they are modelled, considers the drive for wholeness at the core of belief systems.

Michelle Sakaris’ practice takes the form of performance, video and installation, often following the logic of displacement, transposition and re-enactment. Sakaris is particularly interested in the function of ritual as a means for recapturing wholeness in displaced and disintegrating communities. While being a departure from previous work, Architectures continues and extends key themes placing new emphasis on systems of belief, attitudes towards death, and the migrant experience.

Michelle Sakaris completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2009. Recent exhibitions include The 59th Blake Prize Exhibition, National Art School Gallery, Peripheral Vision, George Paton Gallery, and Inhabiting Ritual, Kings ARI. She is the recipient of the 2010 Blake Prize Emerging Artist Award.

Digital technologies promise to transcend familiar reality and to connect us to the paradise that reality has taken from us. Down with the detours and delays of reality: let us have instant gratification! What we cannot have in reality, we can have via the fantasy screen. As a “consensual hallucination” cyberspace would be the utopic, new ideal world.

About the Work
Byte<n> is the second instalment of a performative installation developed in residency at the Watermill Center, New York in April 2010. her Watermill Center residency, Roxby Smith collaborated with new media and theater artists from New York and New Zealand to develop interdisciplinary creation that incorporated visual arts practice, installation, new media art, video art, theater and performance, bringing them together in one "event."

Roxby Smith's recent creations have explored new possibilities of virtual reality media in contemporary art practice. In Byte<n>, she extracts and re-injects her Second Life avatar into physical space so that her work exists on a kaleidoscope of planes: "in world," within a body of physical sculptures, as ephemeral projections in space; and as recreated performances by both humans and avatars. The effect is that of a hall of mirrors, in which viewers occupy multiple realities at once. In fact, through Second Life, audiences will be able access the virtual installation component of the final work not only in person at RearView, but from their own homes. A live stream of this installation will be made available to the original Watermill audience, flipping the two realities of their heads and allowing Melbourne the privileged view.

Artist Statement
By creating an avatar or virtual self we create a strange balance between the level of investment and exposure of ourselves and role play. I am compelled by the general use of the “idealised body” by many users of virtual worlds and the desire to create utopian selves and environments in their blandest possible form. A cerebral longing to create a perfect self and life. Avatars are hollow – avatars are pure, avatars are clean, avatars have no orifices. They do not leak, shit, sweat, rot – there is no inconvenience to their bodies.
In exploring these ideas, I extract my self portrait avatar, Diogenes Wylder, from the screen, re-enacting her movements, wants and needs in a distorted and grotesque version of herself (in what has been referred to as eccentric figuration). The “real” Diogenes can never live up to the idealised world of avatar Diogenes. She becomes clown-like, desperate – stuck between two realities. Many of these performances are reinjected back into the screen and into Second Life where she can be confronted by her avatar self. My work also includes films and performances of the SL avatar – trying as desperately to be real as her counterpart tries to be virtual. These elements – live performance, virtual performance, mirroring, re-enacting , roleplaying - come together in a real world installation often alongside other performers who mimic both my performance and the avatar’s on screen presence. In this way not only the self will be fractured but also the position and role of the audience who are at once caught between realities, identities and their roles as spectator or actor.

The work of Georgie Roxby Smith, which spans a range of disciplines, has been presented in galleries, theaters and festivals including the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Her practice explores new possibilities of the use of virtual reality software, specifically Second Life, in contemporary art through the extraction of "in world" performances into physical installations that create mixed reality events and happenings.

LOVE IT OR LOSE IT is an exhibition of new paintings by Canberra based Emma Beer and Tasmanian based Fernando do Campo. Both artists’ fit into a growing group of emerging Australian abstract painters whose interests lie in questioning the implications of paint as a chosen medium and its pictorial potential through abstraction.

Emma Beer engages with questions concerned with the place of abstraction in contemporary painting. Beer explores the experience and the ‘act of painting’ as her subject, where the painting becomes object and model, consequently used to develop ways of understanding what painting can be. Her practice explores an understanding of paint as substance and matter, colour relations and different mixing systems, as well as developing a greater understanding of the process of constructing a painting. Through this system, Beer questions the implications of making paintings - of and about painting itself. Beer aims to understand and challenge the expectations of painting. Investigating ‘the act of making’ makes the viewer more acutely aware of the relationship between artist and making, finding ways to engage the viewer with formal tensions in the work that hover between levels of stability and instability. Through juxtaposition of tactility, chaos and order she hopes to challenge these expectations along with the understanding of traditional painting techniques.

Fernando do Campo is interested in the questions that can be asked about one’s own ‘spatial exchange’ on pictorial space. “When we look at the history of painting we find that many of these questions have been asked already. A lot of the reasons why ‘painting is not dead’ is because the pictorial space continues to offer infinite pictorial possibilities. I think it’s a process of re-writing these questions. I am interested in discussing the spatial shift triggered by colour, line and varied forms of abstraction.” Painting vocabularies and varied projection systems are also employed, such as the result of when a modulated green line moves through a flat red space. This brings into question which space is the negative and which space is the positive? Can the painted pictorial space be used to discuss do Campo’s fluid and often nostalgic sense of space?

Emma Beer was born in Echuca, country Victoria in 1987. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts with first class Honours from the Australian National University, Canberra in 2009. Emma is currently a Canberra Contemporary Art Space (CCAS) resident and was awarded the Torres Travelling Art Scholarship, by the Embassy of Spain in 2010. She has been included in numerous group exhibitions around Australia with upcoming solo exhibitions in Canberra. She is currently Technical Officer and Sessional Tutor in the Painting Workshop, Australian National University, Canberra. Emma lives and works in Canberra.

Fernando do Campo was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1987 and migrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1997. He completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (Visual) at the University of Tasmania in 2007 and received a Bachelor of Visual Arts – Honours from the Australian National University, Canberra in 2008. Fernando has been included in numerous group exhibitions around Australia as well as solo exhibitions in Tasmania, Canberra and Melbourne. He is currently Director of Artsalive Artspace, Launceston and sessional Lecturer in Painting and Art Theory at the University of Tasmania, Launceston.

Fernando lives and works in Launceston and is represented by Colville Street Art Gallery, Hobart.

The exhibition, Soft Glue – Charlie Sofo & Mary MacDougall follows an awareness of form in art and curating. Working with found and intended materials, and gestures based on personal activity, Sofo presents a single body of work including sculpture, action-based recorded-documentation, sound and a surface intervention. Working directly onto glass, MacDougall presents a series of portrait and ‘photo-realist’ paintings that are finally installed as a glass wall. Her painting experiments are also extended into print-making, producing a stack of individually-touched hand-painted posters.

Studio artists were invited to teem up with one-other and present. The shows had one prerequisite - the use of the studio Ping-Pong table in a way that maintained some semblance of functionality.
One week prior to the first show opening the artists were then told the Ping-Pong table did not need to be functional or even apear in the show.

Everyday Atrocities…
I started this work on the day of the Mumbai Terror attacks-November 2008. It is usually a catastrophe that acts as a catalyst for me to start a work such as this. So I started the work using newspaper images of the shootings in Mumbai and continued sourcing current events from media outlets such as Scientific American Magazines, National Geo’s, Atlantic Monthlies and Guardian weeklies the work concluded with the Israel Defence Forces assault on Gaza in January 2009.

All the information gleaned from these sources entered my head and tumbled out onto the scroll:
Images of endangered species due to climate change, images of a Janjaweed Militia man on horse back in Darfur, Real estate in India affected by the Global Financial Crises, Victims of genocide, Generals and their Hench men, middle east politics, the Iraq war, Pakistan, Militant Islam, Christian fundamentalism vs. Islamic extremism. Stories I heard on the radio, viewed on the Internet, read in books.
The scroll acts, as a chronicle of events that take place in history but is filtered and moulded by my thoughts, personal politics and drawing abilities.

FLESHLESS RESURRECTION

New Work by - Alasdair McLuckie, Belinda Michelle Bassin and Kellie Wells

We now approach the new dawn, stepping into the darkness without fear or flesh; resurrection will soon be upon us. The small window through which we perceive reality widens, purging existing belief structures and self adorned restraints. Fear and bodily pain expunged and the witnesses for the next level are gathered.  
The newly created work for this show acknowledges with intent and energy the work that has gone before, as well as marking a time of renewal, baptizing ideas that are yet to come. Wells’ scratched black panels are filled with the soulful bones of a long history of human torture; the figures pulse with radiant rainbows as they score their way out through the darkness. Belinda's large graphite circular grid uses ancient patterns to search out the third level of consciousness and visualise what has never been seen; while McLuckie’s folkish formalist pen drawings, prints and collages gather together old friends from the woods to bear witness to these unfolding events.
